The Indian Government has set up a special group to review the strategies of the security forces and intelligence agencies in Indian-administered Kashmir. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting of local politicians and security chiefs chaired by the Deputy Indian Prime Minister, L K Advani, in Delhi. This was organised following the killing of more than 20 Hindus in Indian-administered Kashmir last week. The Indian Home Secretary, N Gopalaswamy, has said that some local policemen played a role in the killings. The chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, has been pursuing a policy of working towards a dialogue with separatists in Kashmir – a policy that has included releasing some rebels from prison.
