The Ugandan army has said rebels in the north of the country have killed a government envoy sent to initiate dialogue between the two sides. Army spokesman Lieutenant Paddy Ankunda said the intermediary, Captain Okech Kuru, was shot by rebels of the Lords Resistance Army on Monday in the northern district of Pader. The deceased is said to have quit the rebels LRA to join the army. He is reported to have gone to meet rebel representatives to deliver a letter and two mobile phones. The rebels who have been fighting to overthrown the government of President Yoweri Museveni since 1998, declared a ceasefire at the beginning of this month. Last week, Mr Museveni extended his government’s temporary ceasefire in parts of the north to allow peace mediators to meet rebels. Peace talks between the two sides have yet to take place.
