he government has aggressively defended its prosecution of Lynne F. Stewart, the prominent New York lawyer charged with supporting terrorism, calling her “an indispensable and active facilitator of the terrorist communication network” between an imprisoned sheik and his followers in Egypt, newly filed court papers show. The sheik, Omar Abdel Rahman, has been serving a life sentence for his 1995 conviction in a plot to blow up the United Nations and other New York landmarks. A federal indictment filed last year charges that Ms. Stewart, who had represented the sheik at his trial, distracted guards during a prison visit in 2000, while an Arabic translator took instructions from the sheik that were later passed on to the Islamic Group, a terrorist organization the sheik once led in Egypt.
