The Southern Mindanao regional police command is bracing for possible attacks by New People’s Army rebels especially after the communist guerrillas raided last week the armory of the Paper Industries Co. of the Philippines (Picop) in Bislig, Surigao del Sur. The NPA rebels ran off with over 100 high-powered firearms and ammunitions in the Picop raid. “We are looking out at what these NPA rebels would do now that they have additional firearms that they took from Picop,” Region XI police commander Chief Superintendent Isidro Lape@ntilde;a said. Lape@ntilde;a said police would beef up security in particular in the adjacent provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley, which are all known to be lairs of the insurgency movement in this parts of the country. The regional police chief also said the coming anniversary of the communist movement in the Philippines on March 29 is also a major concern since the NPA rebels were known to launch attacks on the said date.
