As the number of malicious Internet attacks escalates as a knock-on effect of the Iraq war, security companies have warned that online news sites are at risk. “News sites are primary targets for counterattacks, especially given the focus placed on a ‘war of words’ in the lead up to the conflict,” said Kevin Foster, strategy director for security tester NTA monitor. “In particular, the mushrooming of Internet domain names is open to abuse. There is a real risk here that attackers can exploit weaknesses to redirect visitors to fake news sites, to sow confusion and panic.” More than 1,000 sites have already been hacked in relation to the Iraq conflict, according to security firm F-secure.
