As American-led forces launched their attack on Iraq, officials on Long Island yesterday anxiously stepped up security on a wide variety of potential targets for retaliation-minded terrorists. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said its own police force was being augmented by National Guard soldiers and state troopers who will be riding on Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North trains, as well as subways. Nassau County officials said they had beefed up police patrols at 120 vulnerable sites, including malls, hospitals, utility plants, fuel depots, certain houses of worship and aviation sites. “We have received no report of any specific threat to Nassau County,” said County Executive Thomas Suozzi at a news conference in Mineola. “Residents should continue with their daily routines.
