An Australian television cameraman was killed and the television correspondent he worked with was injured this afternoon when a car laden with explosives detonated at a Kurdish military checkpoint here. At least 3 Kurds were killed and 24 others were injured in the same blast, according to reports from area hospitals. The driver of the car also died in the explosion, which was so forceful it scattered body parts as far as 500 feet away. The suicide bombing occurred at a chaotic checkpoint just outside Khurmal, in northeast Iraq near the border with Iran. Khurmal was struck by American cruise missiles early this morning as part of a bombing campaign against Ansar al-Islam, a militant Islamic group. The checkpoint was crowded with civilians who were fleeing the area, and the vehicle, apparently driven by an Islamic militant, managed to mingle with the fleeing Kurds and pull up to the checkpoint, which was manned by secular Kurdish fighters.
