The head of a faction of the dominant militant group in Indian Kashmir, Hizbul Mujahedin, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen, police said. Abdul Majid Dar was gunned down while getting out of a car in Sopore, 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar, a police spokesman said. Police had earlier said he was killed at his brother’s house. Dar’s mother and sister were critically injured in the attack at 11:40 am (0610 GMT). No one immediately claimed responsibility for the killing. Dar was responsible for the Hizbul group calling a unilateral ceasefire with the Indian government forces in July 2000. India reciprocated, ordering troops not to target Hizbul fighters. Full Story
