German prosecutors ordered the arrest of a suspected Islamic extremist Friday after questioning him and four other suspects about alleged plans for an attack in Germany to coincide with the start of the Iraq war. The other suspects were released after questioning by investigators on Thursday, said Frauke Scheuten, a spokeswoman for federal prosecutors. She refused to detail the accusations against the man in custody, who was to be brought before a judge later Friday. Prosecutors said Thursday they believed the suspects wanted to recruit Arab students for imminent bombings in Germany. No possible targets were named, but prosecutors said “there are indications that they may use the beginning of the war against Iraq to carry out an attack.” Investigators on Thursday searched six properties in Berlin, including a mosque and the offices of an Islamic community group.
