A Yemeni gunman shot dead three workers today at an American oil rig in northern Yemen, according to a spokesman for the rig’s supervisor, Hunt Oil Company of Dallas. The assault, which left an American, a Canadian and a Yemeni dead, ended when the assailant shot himself, the company said. Another Canadian worker was wounded. A State Department official said it was not immediately clear whether the attack was politically motivated or what connection the killings had to a conflict with Iraq. Americans in the Middle East have been warned of the heightened risk of terrorism with American and British troops poised to open hostilities against Baghdad.
