Identity theft? This form of cyber crime refers to Mr Forger stealing details on another person’s identity and then impersonating this person to inflict injury, be it financial or emotional. ”While cases to do with the theft of e-mail ID are yet to be registered in Delhi, a few incidents have come to light,” informs Supreme Court advocate and IT expert Pawan Duggal. A recent incident involves an attempt to damage the reputation of a person via the misuse of his e-mail address. ”Not only were offending messages sent from this person’s address, his e-identity was also used to transact illegal business deals,” adds Duggal. As for the modus operandi associated with identity theft, where there is an unscrupulous will, there is a way. There are numerous free websites on the Net which allow surfers to spoof the identity of another individual through tools which circumvent the need to crack passwords.
