A popular Indian movie actor kidnapped in 2001 by a notorious bandit underwent hip replacement surgery Thursday because his arthritic joints were aggravated by forced jungle marches during his captivity, his doctor said. The right knee joint of Rajkumar, a 73-year-old former matinee idol, also will be replaced in a few days. Rajkumar was kidnapped in August 2001 by Veerappan, a forest bandit accused of killing 130 policemen and 2,000 elephants during three decades of poaching and smuggling. Rajkumar was freed after 108 days. “The bandit gang kept on shifting their camp, often walking 40 kilometers (25 miles) in a single day over rugged forest terrain,” said the aging star’s son, Raghavendra, also a film actor.
