The Pentagon and federal prison system choose Muslim chaplains based solely on advice from groups under investigation for allegedly funneling millions of dollars to al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations. The groups, which are believed to practice an extreme form of Islam, are suspected of blocking more modern-thinking imams from counseling thousands of Muslim soldiers and inmates. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has sent letters to the inspectors general of the Pentagon and Bureau of Prisons, asking for a probe of their relationship with the groups. “It’s confounding to believe that the only groups that can hire Muslim clerics in prisons and the military come from those who are being investigated for terrorism ties and who represent the most extreme form of Islam,” he told The Post.
