The United States fears some Iraqi nationals in the Philippines may harm U.S. interests in this country, Foreign Secretary Blas Ople said on Tuesday. “They have expressed some anxiety about Iraqi residents in the Philippines,” Ople told reporters. He was commenting on Washington’s announcement that it had asked unnamed foreign governments to expel Iraqis suspected of intelligence activities. “They’re concerned that some of these Iraqis will try to harm U.S. government interests in the country,” Ople added. A U.S. embassy spokesman declined to give details. “I would not want to talk about specifics,” spokesman Ron Post told Reuters. “It’s fine for Secretary Ople to do so, but I am not authorized…I am not going to say what went on in our diplomatic meetings.” Full Story
