About 300 suspected communist guerillas raided a central Philippine town hall before dawn on Saturday and fled with weapons seized from law enforcement officers, police said. Regional police chief Dionisio Coloma said rebels from the New People’s Army arrived in four minibuses at the Calbiga town hall in Northern Samar province, taking M-16 rifles and pistols from policemen on duty. An Internal Revenue employee was wounded when the guerillas fired at his residence after he refused to yield a gun belonging to his son, a jail guard. Some of the guerillas also were wounded when two officers fired on the rebels, who fled towards a nearby mountain. He said residents took no notice of the minibuses as they arrived, thinking they were bringing athletes for a sports competition. Mr Coloma removed town police chief Ruben Belida and seven officers whose firearms were seized from their posts and commended the two officers who resisted the guerillas. Full Story
