Guatemala has asked U.N. and OAS help in investigating armed gangs that target judges, prosecutors and rights workers, the government said Friday. Largely anonymous threats, attacks and assassinations over the last two years have sparked fears of a return by hit squads like those that sowed death and terror in the 1980s during the height of Guatemala’s 36-year civil war. “Guatemala asked these international organizations yesterday to help in establishing a commission to investigate illegal armed groups and clandestine security organizations,” a Foreign Relations Ministry statement said Friday.
