The Greek Government has made a formal protest to Britain after a Greek national appeared in court in north-east England charged with terrorism offences. Charalumvos Dousemetzis, 25, a former student at the city’s Northumbria University in Newcastle, was arrested by police on 25 February. Dousemetzis, who has lived in Britain for the past eight years, is accused of possessing articles which may be used in connection with the instigation, preparation or commission of an act of terrorism. He was charged on 3 March with two offences under section 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and appeared before a magistrates court in Bedlington, Northumberland on Wednesday. Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou said his country’s protests had been sent to the British Foreign Office on Thursday. His spokesman added that a formal complaint was also sent to Britain’s envoy in Greece, for his failure to inform a senior minister about the arrest. Full Story
