The alleged al-Qaeda mastermind, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, has given interrogators contradictory accounts of Osama bin Laden’s fate. Mohammed was handed over to United States custody and flown to the US base at Bagram in Afghanistan where several leading al-Qaeda and Taliban figures are being held. Interrogators hope he will lead them to bin Laden, but during questioning in Pakistan he gave conflicting statements on the elusive terrorist leader. “Initially he said bin Laden was alive. But he changed his statement and said bin Laden was dead because he had had no contact with him during the past six months”, an official familiar with the investigation said. A Saudi who was close to bin Laden, Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi, was among those held in the Rawalpindi raid that netted Mohammed.
