A bomb ripped through a department store here yesterday, causing a small fire but leaving no casualties. The improvised explosive device — designed to start a fire rather than kill people — went off on the second floor of the South Seas Complex, causing a small blaze and damaging some clothes on display, city police chief Superintendent Sanggacala Dampac said. Police investigators said the bomb was hidden under a pile of cotton shirts. The blast, though not powerful, briefly caused panic, police said. There were no immediate suspects. The bomb was fashioned from a small, battery-operated blasting device packed in a highly combustible white powder that is believed to have been soaked in lighter fluid. “It was not meant for killing shoppers and workers of the department store,” Sgt. Victor Velas of the Army’s 6th Ordnance and Explosives detachment said. “It was designed to cause a fire and, possibly, something went wrong with its timing device so it went off prematurely.” Full Story
