Top Tiger leaders meet in the north

LTTE chief negotiator Anton Balasingham has met with his leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in northern Sri Lanka to plan for the next round of talks to be held in Japan, as the Scandinavian monitors and Norwegian facilitator prepare to take up a host of issues related to cease-fire violations. Balasingham, who arrived in northern Kilinochchi on Sunday with his wife, Adele, who is also the secretary to the LTTE peace delegation, were given a grand welcome before they held consultations with Prabhakaran. A special military helicopter of the Sri Lanka Air Force brought them to the Kilinochchi central grounds where they were welcomed by the head of LTTE’s political section, S.P. Thamilselvan. Balasingham met with the guerrilla leader at an undisclosed location in Mullaitivu. “Discussions focused on the current political situation, the progress of peace talks and matters related to the upcoming round of peace talks in Japan,” LTTE sources said. These meetings are considered crucial to Sri Lanka’s peace process, as the government and guerrillas prepare to tackle the contentious issue of power-sharing in the wake of the Tigers’ 19-year fight for a separate homeland for Sri Lanka’s ethnic Tamil minority.
