Fraud Forum Gears Up to Fight Cyber Criminals

Faced with redundancy, an employee of a North-East company chose to take revenge before picking up his P45. Armed with a computer and a modem he accessed the client database and with a click of a key erased every file. The crime one of many investigated by the Northumbria Police economic crime unit last year both damaged and embarrassed the company concerned. The attack had both wiped out vital records and exposed flaws in the hi-tech security of the business. But the company wasn’t alone. A survey by PriceWaterhouseCoopers in 2001 revealed that 59pc of companies with a presence on the Internet had been targeted by hackers. Yet just 32pc reported attacks. Detective Sergeant Alan Batey, head of computer crime at the Northumbria Police Economic Crime Unit, said: “Cyber fraud is hurting businesses, but many are reluctant to report it. We want to get the message across that we are here to help. Hackers can be tracked down and caught. Businesses must be aware that hackers can be disgruntled employees. Full Story
