For the first time, security has emerged as the top concern in Gartner Dataquest’s annual survey of IT decision-makers in the manufacturing vertical. Thirty-five companies rated projects on a scale of one, not at all important, to seven, extremely important. Security, with a score of 5.57, outdistanced enterprise resource planning (5.23), Web services (4.91), data warehousing (4.54) and IT architecture design or redesign (4.51). The survey was conducted in December and January. “The survey results suggest that 2003 may be a watershed year for security products and services in manufacturing enterprises,” Gartner reports. “Manufacturers never gave it the prominence in IT planning as heavily regulated industries–such as financial services and healthcare–have.” Gartner said that while manufacturing companies are still likely to cut security project expenditures, it will be easier to sell them to management as opposed to other IT projects because the risks of being inadequately protected are highly visible and potentially catastrophic.
