A Florida university on Wednesday fired a professor who was branded by Washington as a leader of an Islamic militant group and was arrested on charges of conspiring to kill more than 100 people. The University of South Florida dismissed Sami Al-Arian because he had abused his position, not because of the criminal charges against him, the university’s president, Judy Genshaft, said. U.S. agents arrested Al-Arian and three other men on Thursday on charges that they raised money to finance suicide bombings and other attacks by the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad that killed over 100 people including two Americans. Al-Arian, who has denied the charges and says he is being “crucified” by U.S. authorities because he is a stateless Palestinian, was named by U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft as the head of Islamic Jihad in North America.
