Twelve people have been knifed to death by suspected Islamic rebels at a bogus roadblock near Algiers in the worst attack on civilians this year, the official APS news agency said on Wednesday. The killings, first reported on Tuesday night by Algerian radio which said 11 people had died, occurred near the hamlet of Ahmeur el Ain, 40 km (25 miles) west of Algiers. Hospital sources said two women and a 16-year-old girl were among the victims. APS said security forces launched a large-scale search for the killers. The agency said the “terrorists” — a term usually referring to Islamist guerrillas who have been waging a bitter war against the government for 11 years — also sprayed a bus with automatic gunfire but there were no reports of injuries in that incident.
