Syria and Israel engaged in a new war of words Thursday after a brutal assault by the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, who claimed that Damascus was openly supporting “terrorist groups.” “Of what use is the campaign against terrorism if others see that states which manifestly fail to live up to their obligations escape condemnation and are even elevated to positions of prominence at the UN?” said Dan Gillerman, Israel’s new UN ambassador, in his first speech to the council. He urged the Security Council to crack down on the Syrian government. The latest diplomatic offensive came as Israel poured troops and armor into the northern flanks of the country to fortify its border with Lebanon against perceived threats by Hizbullah and Damascus-based Palestinian groups in the event of war on Iraq.
