Bomb in van rocks restaurant near airport in southern Philippines

A car bomb exploded outside a restaurant near an airport in the southern Philippines on Thursday, the military said. One woman was reported killed and 10 others wounded. Army spokesman Maj. Julieto Ando said the blast occurred about 100 meters (yards) from the Cotabato airport in Maguindanao province on Mindanao island, and 150 meters (yards) from the army’s 6th Infantry Division headquarters. The military said a 20-year-old waitress was killed and 10 people wounded. The bomb was placed inside a van parked in front of the airport, said Brig. Gen. Trifonio Salazar, deputy division commander. The Cotabato airport terminal building and the Philippine Airlines office were also damaged. The last plane left the airport two hours before the 2:35 p.m. (0635 GMT) explosion, Salazar said. Hours later, the airline announced it was suspending daily flights to Cotabato airport starting Friday, until officials declare it safe for commercial flights. It said the military had cordoned off the airport. Full Story
