The killing of a Saudi provincial official does not appear to be politically motivated, the interior minister was quoted as saying Tuesday. Hamad al-Wardi, a deputy to the prince in charge of the northern al-Jawf province, was shot dead on Monday morning while traveling to work. It was the second killing of an al-Jawf civil servant in six months. In September, a judge in the province’s religious court was shot dead. The assailants have not been caught. The authorities have said they are investigating the al-Wardi shooting and will announce the results as soon as possible. “It is difficult to think that this incident had a political side,” Prince Nayef said in remarks published in the Saudi newspaper Al-Watan. “At any rate, it is difficult for anyone to make guesses until indications and evidence appear.” Prince Nayef said so far there was no link between the killing of the judge and that of al-Wardi.
