President Bush sought on Friday to reassure a nation unnerved by fears of terrorism by saying, “We’re trying to protect you,” as a senior official suggested the current ‘high’ threat status would be reviewed. The official said a factor in raising the terror threat status last week to its second-highest level was the Islamic haj pilgrimage season, which ended on Thursday. “One of the elements that brought us up (to the current level) was the relationship to the haj itself … so what we will be doing over the next period of time is taking a real hard look at how long we need to stay at this level,” the official told reporters at a briefing on national counterterrorism strategy. But he said it was too early to say the threat had diminished. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said earlier on Friday that current intelligence supported keeping the threat level at ‘high,’ but threat levels were reviewed daily. Full Story
