Transport officials on Friday ordered all terminals, ports and airports in the Philippines on the highest security alert to thwart possible retaliatory attacks by Muslim extremists if war breaks out in Iraq. “Heightened alert should be observed in all the terminals, ports and airports, both domestic and international, to see to it that any attempt to sow terror will be pre-empted,” Transport Secretary Leandro Mendoza said in a statement. “We should guarantee the safety of both local and foreign travelers,” he said, adding the stricter security measures would focus on “all areas that are open for attacks.” Last week, military chief Gen. Dionisio Santiago told reporters “the possibility is very strong” that Muslim rebels or terrorists could launch attacks against foreign, civilian or government targets in the country in sympathy with Iraq.
