Osama bin Laden is using a possible United States-led war with Iraq to rally sympathy for his al-Qaeda network, analysts said after the latest message believed to be from the terrorist leader. But observers expressed doubt about Bush Administration claims that the broadcast on the Al-Jazeera television station proved a strong link between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein. The voice on the tape, which US officials believe to be bin Laden’s, said he was following “with great interest the crusaders’ preparations to re-occupy the ancient capital of Islam”, or Baghdad. He urged Iraqis to dig trenches and engage in urban warfare to fend off US troops, and called on Muslims throughout the Middle East to rise up against Arab rulers who support the US military plan.
