Osama bin Laden issued a call to arms on Tuesday that urged Iraqis to stand firm against an impending US invasion and claimed the US and Israel would soon face new suicide attacks. In an audio tape, which US intelligence officials said was almost certainly authentic, the al-Qaeda leader said the attacks would be “a disaster [the US and Israel] have never experienced before”. The warnings, which were broadcast on Tuesday night on al-Jazeera, the Arab television network, were the first from Mr bin Laden since November and came amid growing US and European fears of further terrorist attacks. George Tenet, Central Intelligence Agency chief, said that US intelligence had received the “most specific” threats yet of an impending attack on US targets at home or on the Arabian peninsula.
