Terrorism and Iraq are hot topics at a meeting of the nation’s biggest legal group, which is debating the rights of U.S. citizens held as enemy combatants and whether Saddam Hussein can be tried for war crimes. The American Bar Association at its midyear meeting in Seattle is weighing a range of contentious issues before action by its policy-making body on Monday, including whether it should oppose a Bush administration anti-terrorism measure barring U.S. citizens jailed as enemy combatants from talking to defense lawyers. The ABA is also scheduled to consider whether it would oppose possible provisions in any anti-terrorism money-laundering laws that would force lawyers to disclose confidential information that would hurt the lawyer-client relationship.
