A local police chief was said to be “clinically dead” after he was shot by a masked gunman in Spain’s northern Basque region, in an attack blamed on the armed Basque separatist group ETA. “This was a new attack by the ETA terrorist group,” Spanish Interior Minister Angel Acebes said. If confirmed it would be the first strike by the armed separatists this year, coming almost three months before municipal elections. Joseba Pagazaurtundua, the police chief for the town of Andoain, was first thought to be dead after he was shot, but then rushed to a hospital in San Sebastian in a critical condition, the Basque region’s interior ministry said.
