The Solomon Islands has been rocked by the assassination of a much-loved elder statesman who had been negotiating the demobilisation of former ethnic militants appointed as police special constables. Witnesses said the dead man, Sir Frederick Soaki, was shot at close range by a masked man on Monday night. “It was almost a mafia-style execution,” said one foreign diplomat. The killing comes amid deep concerns over the involvement of special constables in lawlessness, including ethnic violence and extortion.
