The European Commission proposed the creation of an agency to handle cyber security issues on 10 February. The Commission unveiled on 10 February plans for a European Network and Information Security Agency charged with serving as a “centre of competence where both Member States and EU Institutions can seek advice on matters relating to cyber security.” The aim of the new 30-strong expert task force is to avert cyber attacks on key European installations. “The agency will build on national efforts to enhance network and information security and to increase the ability of member states and EU institutions to prevent and respond to network and information security problems,” European Commissioner in charge of information policy Erkki Liikanen said.
