The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has suspended its operations in the northern Uganda districts of Pader, Kitgum and Gulu, following an ambush on its convoy on Saturday 8 February at Paiula in Pader District. Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels injured six URCS volunteers. The rebels took personal effects and communication equipment which included two HF radios and four radio handsets. In a statement issued yesterday, the URCS chairman, Tom Buruku, said, “the suspension will continue until security is conducive to the resumption of operations.” Buruku said, “The URCS would like to deplore and protest the attack on its clearly marked vehicles and volunteers operating on a humanitarian mission.” The six volunteers were returning from Pader town council after assessing the needs of the recently displaced persons.
