Senior Spanish politicians led thousands of marchers under the banner “ETA No” in the Basque town of Andoain on Sunday in protest at the killing of the local police chief. “ETA assassins!” shouted members of the 4,000-strong march, which passed close to the bar where a hooded gunman shot Jose Pagazaurtundua, 45, on Saturday as he ate breakfast. Pagazaurtundua, a married father-of-two, was an active member of an anti-ETA group and the local Socialist party which has suffered years of intimidation and attacks from radical Basque nationalists in Andoain. ETA, which is listed as a terrorist organisation by the European Union and the United States, has killed 838 people since 1968 in pursuit of an independent state in Basque areas of northern Spain and southwestern France.
