Calif. Man Charged with Hacking ViewSonic System
A former employee of ViewSonic Corp. was arrested on Thursday for allegedly hacking into its computer system and destroying data, shutting down a server that was central to the firm’s foreign operations. Andy Garcia, 39, was taken into custody on a federal indictment that charges him with unauthorized access to a protected computer and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. ViewSonic, a privately held company based in Walnut, California, makes computer monitors and high-definition televisions. The company has received financing from Intel Corp. INTC.O and is working with that chip giant and Microsoft Corp. MSFT.O to roll out a new line of portable video players. The company’s founder Chief Executive James Chu is the majority shareholder.
