A militant Palestinian group said Tuesday that Israel’s Mossad intelligence service planned to assassinate senior Hamas official Khaled Mashaal while he was in Egypt for talks on a Palestinian truce last month. Osama Hamdan, Hamas’ spokesman in Lebanon, said his group received information last month that Mashaal, Hamas’ political executive, should not go to Egypt “because Israel aims to target him and this can happen at any moment.” Hamdan told The Associated Press he had no further details on the plan, but said Egyptian authorities “exerted serious efforts to guarantee his security” during Mashaal’s stay in Cairo, where he met with other Palestinian representatives.
