BUSINESSES are failing to protect themselves adequately from crippling internet threats and computers are more vulnerable to cyber attack, new research shows. The study, conducted by Symantec, a provider of internet security services, also reveals that a sharp increase in the number of flaws in software is enabling computer hackers to take advantage of the weakness. The report shows that the number of “vulnerabilities” in software soared last year by 81.5 per cent to 2,524, the equivalent of seven new flaws a day. The rise was caused by the greater complexity of software programs and better detection of vulnerability. Graham Titterington, an analyst at Ovum Holway, an independent research house, said that as vulnerability grew, businesses were leaving themselves more open to attack by connecting to broadband internet services.
