Vice President Dick Cheney told GOP activists Friday that the administration’s aggressive policy towards Iraq “is not a distraction to waging the war on terror” but is crucial to waging that war. Cheney listed recent accomplishments in the war on terror such as “depriving Al-Qaida of its stronghold in Afghanistan,” freezing millions of dollars in terrorist assets and taking many top al-Qaida leaders out of action. But he said Iraq, with its history of developing weapons of mass destruction and its close ties to terrorists, poses a huge threat. He said Iraqi leader Saddam Hussei has “absolutely no intention of disarming” and has immense stores of anthrax, sarin gas, mustard gas and other deadly agents. Those weapons could easily be passed to terrorists who could use them against this country, he said. Saddam also is very interested in obtaining nuclear weapons. Full Story
