The Afghan authorities said today that they had detained eight suspects in connection with the bus explosion just outside the southern city of Kandahar on Friday morning. They also revised the death toll to 8 dead — down from 16. Two people were injured. American troops who have been scouring a mountain area southeast of Kandahar, the Adi Ghar range, for rebel fighters from last week’s battle said today that they had come under fire from a lone gunman on Friday, but that they had failed to capture him. An American military spokesman, Col. Roger King, said the episode, along with other unspecified evidence, led them to believe that there were still rebels at large in the area. Full Story
