A visiting scholar at a prominent Washington thinktank was picked up this week by the government for failing to check in with immigration authorities — prompting a rebuke of the Justice Department by Pakistan’s foreign minister. Ejaz Haider, an editor at Pakistan’s widely-read English-language newsweekly, the Friday Times, was detained Tuesday by two armed Immigration and Naturalization Service agents as part of the government’s registration program for temporary foreign visitors. The Justice Department told The Washington Post in Thursday’s editions that Haider, a visiting research scholar at the liberal oriented Brookings Institution, had missed a deadline for checking back in with the INS within 40 days of registering upon his arrival at Dulles International Airport in suburban Chantilly, Va.
