“We will never forget” reads a mural of the twin towers of the World Trade Center guarded by a Marine and a sailor painted on a bulkhead in the hangar bay of the USS Nassau. The Nassau is an amphibious assault ship on station in the Gulf, and waiting for war — or peace. In the space in front of the mural two Marines go about their business, hammering a bolt into an aircraft tow-bar. Elsewhere Marines and sailors work on helicopter engines, practice their hand to hand fighting skills or clean their gear, all anxious to know whether they will go to war against Iraq. Full Story
