Canada Boosts Marine Security to Prevent Terrorism
The Canadian government, sensitive to charges that Canadian ports are so riddled with crime that nuclear weapons could slip in, announced new measures Wednesday to strengthen maritime security. The $112.7 million five-year package, would test equipment to screen containers for radiation and increase tracking of ships, as well as introducing other steps aimed at preventing attacks. “Vigilance and close collaboration, within and outside our borders, will remain our best defense against terrorist threats,” Transport Minister David Collenette said in announcing the package.
