VENEZUELA’S military raid on a Coca-Cola bottling plant part-owned by the United States has refocused Washington’s attention on the political crisis that is gripping America’s fourth-largest oil supplier. President Chávez has ordered the Venezuelan Army to seize food and drink distribution plants blocked by the country’s seven-week anti-government strike. Charles Shapiro, the US Ambassador, said that he was “concerned and disappointed” by the seizures, which, he said, affected US interests in Venezuela. “I hope I’m wrong, but it looks like the officers did not act within the law,” he said.
