Banks run ID checks on 40m people in terror war
High street banks are to check the identities of every account holder in the country in a new initiative to root out money launderers, financial criminals and terrorist financiers. In the coming months the big six banks – Abbey National, Barclays, HBOS, HSBC, Lloyds TSB and Royal Bank of Scotland – will trawl their existing 40m customers ensure their accounts match their identities.
