In March 2002, Ghanaian authorities sent troops to the Northern Region of Ghana, imposed a curfew, and declared a state of emergency to quell ethnic violence. The situation continues to be volatile, and the state of emergency remains in effect. The Embassy urges American citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to the Northern Region of Ghana during the state of emergency.
