“Decapitations as part of ongoing drug wars has become a common news item in Mexico. Now these beheadings, murder-as-message, are appearing in Puerto Rico. As the drug war violence in Mexico escalates to horrifying levels, spreading beyond the rival gangs to encompass government officials, members of the media, schools and civilians, the murder level in Puerto Rico also rises. According to the F.B.I., about 75% of the murders on the island, on pace to set a record by surpassing 1,000 in 2011, are related to the drug trade.”
