Karzai Nominates Member of Opposition as Vice President

“Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday nominated opposition Tajik politician Yunus Qanooni as a replacement vice president, a choice that could help bridge differences with the opposition as crucial elections approach. If the selection is approved by lawmakers, as is widely expected, Mr. Qanooni would succeed Mohammed Qasim Fahim, also a prominent Tajik, who died of illness earlier this month.”
